QUITO, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador on Tuesday reported 741 new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and 46 more deaths from the disease in the past 24 hours, raising the total caseload to 109,030 and the death toll to 6,368.
According to the Ministry of Public Health, 22.7 percent of cases, or 22,683, are concentrated in the north-central province of Pichincha, where the capital Quito is located.
The city of Quito, the most populated in Ecuador, reported 20,498 confirmed cases, 144 more than on Monday.
After Pichincha, the province of Guayas, whose capital is Guayaquil, is the second worst hit by the pandemic, with an accumulated 18,563 cases of infection.
However, Guayas has the highest death toll, with 1,671 deaths, followed by Pichincha, with 894, and Manabi, with 870.
The country's overall death toll from COVID-19 could be higher, because another 3,696 deaths are suspected of having been caused by the coronavirus, but have not been verified, the ministry said. Enditem
