JAKARTA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo said on Friday that the newly-inaugurated international airport in central Yogyakarta province was designed to be resistant to an 8.8-magnitude quake and a 12-meter-high tsunami.

"Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Ibu (Mrs.) Dwikorita, told me that the new airport can withstand a 12-meter-high tsunami," the president said when inaugurating the Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in the province.

He said the new airport's runway is 3,250 meters long compared to that of the old Adisucipto airport, which is 2,200 meters long.

The old Adisucipto airport is operated only for narrow-bodied aircraft, while the new one is for Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 planes, said the president who also inaugurated an Indonesia's Airnav Tower and a tsunami early warning system on the occasion.

According to Widodo, the old airport's passenger terminal has a total capacity of 1.6 million passengers annually, while the new one is built with a capacity of 20 million passengers yearly. Enditem
