QUITO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Ecuadoran Ministry of Public Health (MSP) announced on Thursday that 903 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and 29 more deaths were registered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 116,360, with 6,648 deaths.
The MSP also reported that another 3,751 deaths were likely caused by the virus, but these have yet to be confirmed.
The province of Pichincha, where the capital city of Quito is located, has shown a sustained increase in infection, with a total of 24,563 cases and 943 deaths.
The vast majority of the cases in Pichincha have been recorded in Quito, which ramped up testing last week from 800 to 1,500 tests administered per day. The objective, according to authorities, is to detect more cases and take measures to stop the spread of the disease, which has rebounded in the city since the quarantine was relaxed on June 3.
"We must continue to fight COVID-19; there is no set date for this pandemic to end," said the National Committee for Emergency Operations (COE), which is managing the health crisis. Enditem
