Boat with 51 migrants arrives in Cyprus

NICOSIA, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- A boat with 51 migrants landed on the east coast of Cyprus on Saturday, adding to the scores of new arrivals on the Mediterranean island, police said.

The boat came ashore on a rocky coast near Paralimni. According to police, 35 men, five women, and 11 children were aboard the vessel.

The group was tested for COVID-19 before being documented and transferred to a local detention center.

The nationality of the migrants was not disclosed by authorities.

Illegal migration to the island has risen dramatically so far this year. On Monday, 23 illegal immigrants from Syria arrived in an inflatable dinghy near the eastern town of Larnaca. Enditem
