NEW DELHI -- A single-day spike of 90,802 COVID-19 cases was witnessed in India over the past 24 hours, while 1,016 more deaths took place, showed the latest data released by the country's health ministry on Monday.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 119 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Monday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 21,296.

COLOMBO -- The Sri Lanka Navy on Monday said that a fire onboard the MT New Diamond oil tanker which caught fire in the seas off Sri Lanka on Thursday had been completely doused.

The vessel had been carrying 270,000 metric tonnes of crude oil and was heading to the Paradip Port in India from Kuwait when a fire broke out in its engine room, threatening to cause a massive oil spill in the Indian Ocean. (Sri Lanka-Tanker Fire)

SYDNEY -- Officials in the Australian state of Victoria have extended a strict COVID-19 lockdown by two weeks, saying that virus numbers had not fallen enough to ease restrictions.

CANBERRA -- Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a deal to acquire more than 84 million doses of potential coronavirus vaccines.

Morrison, Health Minister Greg Hunt, and Karen Andrews, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, on Monday announced vaccine deals with the University of Queensland and Australian biotechnology company CSL, and also with the University of Oxford and pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca.
