TEGUCIGALPA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Transportation workers in Honduras protested nationwide on Monday as lockdown measures against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic entered their sixth month.

Buses blocked main roadway intersections throughout the country as drivers demanded financial aid from the government, which has restricted their operations to no more than 50 percent of capacity as part of social distancing measures.

Cities such as Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Comayagua and Olancho woke up to roadblocks by buses and taxis.

Meanwhile, the National Risk Management System said it was extending the phase 1 lockdown until Sept. 13, maintaining a red alert and nighttime curfew from 8 p.m. local time (0200 GMT).

Essential businesses, such as supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and hardware stores, are operating.

Honduras has so far reported 64,764 confirmed cases of the virus and 2,007 deaths from the disease. Enditem
