UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior UN official on Tuesday hailed cooperation between the world body and the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

Bintou Keita, assistant secretary-general for Africa, highlighted cooperation between the United Nations and the OIF in early warning and conflict prevention, peacekeeping and peacebuilding.

"I would like to commend the joint work of the United Nations and the International Organisation of La Francophonie in the fields of early warning and conflict prevention, as well as in electoral assistance and the observation of electoral processes," she said.

Recently, the United Nations and the OIF have cooperated in these areas in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, the Central African Republic (CAR), and the Democratic Republic of Congo, she noted.

In terms of prevention, the OIF plays an important role in the establishment of a Francophone network for the prevention of radicalization and violent extremism that may lead to terrorism. This is a considerable contribution, especially in the Sahel, she told the Security Council in a debate on the role of the OIF in the context of cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations.

Conflict prevention also relies on the promotion of fully inclusive societies, especially of women and young people. This is a key area of collaboration between the United Nations and the OIF, she said.

Keita welcomed the strong support that OIF members are giving to peacekeeping operations.

Joint efforts are being made to increase the level of French-speaking personnel in peacekeeping operations deployed in French-speaking host countries. The United Nations encourages the OIF members to continue their efforts to build the capacity of French-speaking civilian and uniformed personnel, in particular, to enable them to access high-level positions in peacekeeping operations, she said.

It is important to underline the role of the OIF in the field of peacebuilding, in cooperation with various organizations which each plays a role that is as unique as it is essential, she said.

She commended the participation of the OIF in the work of the Peacebuilding Commission devoted to Burundi, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and the CAR, as well as in ad hoc meetings of the commission on other French-speaking countries affected by conflicts. Enditem
