MEXICO CITY, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Mexico has not registered new outbreaks of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the number of deaths is in decline, Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday.

"We can say that, fortunately, the number of infections has decreased and, more importantly, so have the number of deaths," Lopez Obrador said during his regular morning press conference.

"We are managing to tame this pandemic, and I hope that this nightmare will soon pass and we will return to the new normality, the new reality," he added.

Lopez Obrador also spotlighted the contribution of healthcare workers since the country reported its first case of COVID-19 on Feb. 28.

Mexico reported a total of 67,781 deaths from COVID-19 and 637,509 cases of infection as of Monday.

Mexico City, the country's capital, has seen 16.6 percent of those cases, according to official figures. Enditem
