MEXICO CITY, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- An international friendly between Mexico and Costa Rica could be called off because of the coronavirus pandemic, the head of the Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUT) said on Tuesday.

The teams are due to meet at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on September 30, however health concerns and possible quarantine measures have cast doubt over the fixture.

"We are waiting for the health ministry to give us an answer, because having the players quarantined for 14 days, when they return from Mexico, is not possible for the clubs," FEDEFUT president Rodolfo Villalobos was quoted as saying by newspaper El Universal.

Villalobos added: "There are 21 days left, but in a pandemic many things can happen. The agreement is there, but if the conditions are not met in both countries, the match could be suspended. We already have a hotel but we still don't know about the flight. There are no direct flights but there is one via Houston."

The fixture, if it goes ahead, will be the first outing for both teams this year. International matches in the North American, Central American and the Caribbean Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) have been suspended since March because of the global health crisis. Enditem
