MANILA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 245,143 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,176 new cases on Wednesday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries also rose to 185,543 after 376 more patients recovered.

Meanwhile, 70 more patients died from the viral disease, bringing the death toll to 3,986.

Metro Manila topped the five regions or provinces with the highest number of daily confirmed cases reported on Wednesday at 1,327.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire told a virtual media forum that the DOH supports the proposal of the national coronavirus task force to prohibit home quarantine for COVID-19 patients and their close contacts to prevent community transmission.

The task force earlier said that it plans to implement this week a strict ban on home quarantine to prevent transmission in the households, adding that it is better that the patients are put into government quarantine facilities. Enditem
