Live COVID-19 updates: Russia's cases up 5,504 to over 1.05 mln

BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 5,504 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its nationwide total to 1,051,874, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Friday.

Meanwhile, 102 new deaths were reported, taking the death toll to 18,365, it said.

Moscow, the country's worst-hit region, reported 698 new cases, bringing its tally of infections to 269,777, the center said.

WASHINGTON -- A new study has shown that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States has been greatly undercounted due to a lack of testing, local media reported Thursday.

The case tally in the United States does not "capture the total burden of the pandemic because testing has been primarily restricted ... due to limited test availability," researchers at the School of Public Health, University of California Berkeley wrote in the report.

TBILISI -- Georgia confirmed 87 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, a record high number since the outbreak of the virus in the country, bringing its total to 1,917.

Out of the 87 new cases, 39 were detected in the western Adjara region of Georgia, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health said.

As of Friday, 1,354 of the 1,917 patients have recovered, while 19 others have died, the center said.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand confirmed one new community case of COVID-19 in Auckland on Friday.

The new case has an epidemiological link to an existing case and is associated with the Mt Roskill Evangelical Fellowship bereavement events group in Auckland, according to the Ministry of Health.

HONG KONG -- China's Hong Kong reported 12 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with two identified under a mass testing program, taking the total tally to 4,925.

Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection reported nine imported cases and three local ones at a press briefing on Friday. Of local infections, one was related to a previous case and the other two involved participants of the ongoing Universal Community Testing Program.

TEHRAN -- A total of 397,801 positive cases of COVID-19 among the Iranians were reported on Friday, including 2,313 new patients overnight, according to Iran's health ministry.

During the past 24 hours, 1,253 Iranians were hospitalized due to complications from COVID-19, Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said at her daily briefing.

The pandemic has so far claimed 22,913 lives in Iran, up by 115 in the past 24 hours, said Lari.

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan recorded 548 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the overall count to 300,371, according to the data updated by the country's health ministry on Friday morning.

The country also recorded five fatalities over the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide death toll to 6,370. Enditem
