HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong police will keep in contact with related departments of the mainland to track the developments of a case in which 12 Hong Kong people were arrested on mainland waters for illegally crossing the boundary, a senior Hong Kong official said Monday.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government respects and will not interfere in the law enforcement of other jurisdictions, Secretary for Security John Lee Ka-chiu said in an online article. (Hong Kong-Mainland-Crime)

YANGON -- Myanmar reported eight more COVID-19 deaths on Monday night, bringing the death toll in the country to 32 in total, according to a release from the Health and Sports Ministry .

According to the release, all patients with underlying diseases recently tested positive for COVID-19, died on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday respectively. (Myanmar-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga on Monday was elected as the new president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to take over from outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Suga, 71, a native of Akita Prefecture, is now virtually assured of becoming the next prime minister owing to the LDP's dominance in both chambers of Japan's bicameral parliament and is expected to be named as the new prime minister at an extraordinary Diet session to be convened on Wednesday.
