UN says 500,000 people affected by floods in South Sudan

JUBA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The UN humanitarian agency said on Monday that an estimated 500,000 people have been affected by flooding across South Sudan.
The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that parts of the east African nation affected by the heavy flooding include Jonglei and Lake States, respectively.
"By August, an estimated 500,000 people had been affected by flooding in areas along the White Nile, with Jonglei and Lakes the worst affected states," OCHA said in its latest humanitarian report.
It said heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, flooding vast areas and settlements, adding that in Bor South county of Jonglei state, at least over 33,000 people were earlier displaced by conflict and flooding.
"The population in the Jonglei region in the places of Bor, Twic East, Duk counties to the north moved west into Awerial County, and took shelter in Mingkaman displaced settlement," OCHA said.
In 2019, the UN said that an estimated 900,000 people were displaced due to flooding in Jonglei, Pibor and Eastern Equatoria regions. Enditem
