CANBERRA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Australia has recorded its first day without a coronavirus death in over two months.

The national death toll remained unchanged at 816 as of Tuesday afternoon.

It ends a streak of 64 days with at least one death that dates back to July 13 when the national death toll was only more than 100.

A total of 729 deaths have been reported in Victoria, which now accounts for 89 percent of Australia's deaths.

As of Tuesday afternoon Australia had confirmed 26,738 cases of COVID-19 with 50 new cases in last 24 hours.

Victoria confirmed 42 new cases and reclassified three that were previously diagnosed, taking the state's total number of cases to 19,911 - or 74.5 percent of Australia's total figure.

The average number of new cases over the last 14 days in metropolitan Melbourne has fallen to 52.9 - just over the 50 required for strict stage four lockdown restrictions to be eased.

New South Wales confirmed seven more cases on Tuesday and Queensland another one.

The number of active cases of the virus in Australia on Tuesday was 1,222, a fall of 36 from Monday.

The figure included 139 patients being treated in hospitals around the country, 17 of whom were in intensive care. Enditem
