DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania police said on Tuesday they have arrested the owner of a school where a dormitory fire killed 10 pupils and injured seven others in the country's northwest region of Kagera.

"Police are holding the owner of the school for investigations," Tanzania's police chief Simon Sirro told a news conference shortly after he had inspected the dormitory in Kyerwa district of Kagera region.

Sirro, the Inspector General of Police, also ordered the arrest of education officials in Kyerwa district who approved the school to be operational as the electrical wiring of the school buildings was substandard.

"The electrical wiring of the school buildings is very poor. I wonder how relevant authorities allowed this school to operate," said Sirro.

At least 10 pupils were killed and seven others injured on Sunday night after a fire burnt a dormitory to ashes at the primary school for boys in Kyerwa district.

"The 10 victims were burnt beyond recognition and three of the seven injured pupils are in critical condition," Marco Gaguti, Kagera regional commissioner, told Xinhua when reached by phone on Monday.

The police chief said four of the seven injured pupils were in critical condition, adding that they were transferred to Bugando referral hospital in Mwanza region for specialized treatment. Enditem
