BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally surpassed the 5 million mark on Wednesday, reaching 5,020,359, said latest data released by the federal health ministry.

As many as 90,123 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the past 24 hours, revealed the data.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 113 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Wednesday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 22,504.

The daily caseload stayed below 200 for two straight weeks, but it continued to grow in triple digits since Aug. 14.

YANGON -- Myanmar confirmed four new deaths, bringing the death toll to 39 in total on Wednesday morning, said a daily release from the Health and Sports Ministry.

Four more COVID-19 patients with underlying diseases died of acute respiratory failure, the release said.

SHANGHAI -- Shanghai reported two imported COVID-19 cases and no domestically transmitted cases on Tuesday, the municipal health commission said Wednesday.

One of the patients is a Chinese national who left the United States on Aug. 30 and arrived in Shanghai via the Netherlands on Sept. 1, while the other is an Indian who arrived at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport from India on Sept. 2.

SANTIAGO -- The Chilean government said Tuesday health inspections will be stepped up on social distancing measures during national holiday celebrations on Sept. 18-20 to contain the spread of COVID-19.

"On pandemic issues, the health authorities have no restrictions," and inspectors will be able to enter private homes during the holiday and fine violators of the ban on large gatherings, Interior Minister Victor Perez told a press conference.

CAIRO -- Egypt reported 163 COVID-19 infections with 18 deaths over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 101,340 with 5,679 deaths, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 776 recoveries were registered, bringing the national count to 85,745, said the ministry in a statement.

TRIPOLI -- Three chartered planes of COVID-19 health supplies procured by the World Health Organization (WHO) has reached Libya, the organization said on Tuesday.

"The shipments included gloves, masks, N95 masks, face shields, gowns, goggles, oxygen concentrators, thermometers and coveralls to enhance COVID-19 response in the country. The supplies will be distributed in close cooperation with health authorities across the country," the WHO said in a statement.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's state-owned oil company Petrobras on Monday announced the decision to cut investment by 24 billion U.S. dollars due to the financial crunch caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company's 2021-2025 Strategic Plan calls for investment of 40 billion to 50 billion dollars, significantly less than the 64 billion dollars proposed in its 2020-2024 Strategic Plan.

The new plan also calls for selling off more assets in the areas of oil exploration and production.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The Brazilian government announced on Tuesday that the number of daily deaths from COVID-19 has tripled, with 1,113 deaths registered in the last 24 hours, while the number of new cases more than doubled, with 36,653 cases registered in the same period.

With these new fatalities, the death toll rose to 133,119, while the total number of cases rose to 4,382,263. Enditem
