1 dead, 4 missing after boat catches fire in eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- One died and four others went missing after a boat caught fires in Talaga waters in the Indonesian province of Southeast Sulawesi on Tuesday, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the Search and Rescue Agency in Southeast Sulawesi's capital of Kendari, the cargo ship KM Yuliner 05 carrying cement caught fires at about 2 p.m. local time during its trip to Binongko Island in Southeast Sulawesi province's district of Wakatobi from Pangkajene Island in South Sulawesi.

Some fishermen found two people at the accident in the waters, and one of them died during the evacuation, Aris Sofingi, chief of the Search and Rescue Agency was quoted by state-news agency Antara as saying.

He said that the rescue team would expand search area for the four missing people.

Boat accidents are common in Indonesia which consists of more than 17,000 islands. Such mishaps usually happen due to lax safety standards. Enditem
