NAIROBI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's sports ministry on Friday released guidelines for the resumption of sporting events in the country after several months of COVID-19 disruptions.

Amina Mohamed, cabinet secretary for sports, said all outdoor recreation and non-contact sporting activities would restart in phases.

"Non-contact sports will reopen in a phased manner, while water sports will remain suspended until further notice," she told a news conference in Nairobi.

"All contact sports will remain suspended until further notice. Testing will not be mandatory, but where required, the cost shall be met by federations, sports organizations, participants, or event organizers as applicable," she added.

The first phase will be dedicated to medical and athletes' tests, followed by the second phase. The players will be required to resume training individually for seven days before training in small groups for a week.

Mohamed said gyms and sporting camps and academies may reopen immediately but must stick to strict coronavirus containment measures.

The Secretary for Sports said national teams participating in international events in the water sports or contact sports categories would be required to seek a special exemption from the cabinet secretary in the ministry of sports.

Mohamed also announced that all under-18 sports would remain suspended, and special consideration will be granted to national teams preparing for select international events.

"The government will, however, give priorities to Team Kenya events in a manner to be determined by the ministry in consultation with individual Federations," she said.

All the sporting activities in the country were halted in March when the government banned all gatherings in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
