SANTIAGO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chilean Minister of Health Enrique Paris on Friday called on Chileans to continue to adhere to preventive health measures during the national holidays that will take place this weekend.

"We must be aware that if we want to win the battle against the coronavirus, we must continue to be responsible, not to lower our guard, and always maintain ... sanitary measures such as the use of masks, physical distancing, and hand washing," Paris said during a press conference.

Chileans will celebrate their Independence Day holidays from Sept. 18 to 20, and authorities are taking extra precautions so that areas that have ended their quarantines do not see a sudden surge in infections.

Paris announced that 33,240 tests for the virus were carried out in the last 24 hours, for a total of 2,975,891 tests administered to date.

Additionally, authorities reported 1,673 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, for a total of 442,827 cases registered since the disease was first detected in the country.

Another 57 deaths were registered in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 12,199, according to the Department of Statistics and Health Information.

Chile is still under a state of emergency and the government has announced that it will increase enforcement of preventive health measures during the holidays. Enditem
