Live COVID-19 updates: Poland reports over 1,000 new cases, record high since outbreak

BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WARSAW -- The Polish Health Ministry reported on Saturday 1,002 new cases of COVID-19 over a 24-hour period, the largest single-day surge since the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The government expects numbers to rise steadily over the coming weeks as people return to their normal lives, a health ministry spokesperson told local media after a press conference.

DOHA -- The Qatari Health Ministry on Saturday announced 229 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number in the Gulf state to 123,146, official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

Meanwhile, 267 more recovered from the virus, bringing the total recoveries to 120,089, while the death toll remained at 209, according to a ministry statement quoted by QNA.

KAMPALA -- Uganda's Ministry of Health on Saturday recorded 423 new cases of COVID-19, the highest daily increase since the outbreak, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 6,017.

Out of the 2,320 samples collected over the past 24 hours, 411 contacts and alerts cases, 12 returnees from Saudi Arabia, India and Jordan tested positive for the novel coronavirus, said a ministry in a statement.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 15 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 57,558.

Of the new cases, five are imported cases, one is a community case and the rest are linked with the dormitories of foreign workers.

BEIJING -- China has eased restrictions on theaters and other performance venues, including raising the cap on audience numbers, as the COVID-19 epidemic has waned in the country.

Performing centers are now allowed to fill 75 percent of their operating capacity, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement.

TEHRAN -- The novel coronavirus pandemic has claimed 24,118 lives in Iran as of Saturday, up by 166 new death cases overnight, Iran's Health Ministry said.

Iran's confirmed cases of the disease rose to 419,043 on Saturday, with registered 2,845 new patients in the past 24 hours, Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing. Enditem
