Chairman of Sudan's Sovereign Council heads to UAE for talks with UAE leaders, U.S. delegation

KHARTOUM, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chairman of Sudan's Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Sunday left for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a two-day visit over Sudan-related regional issues.
Al-Burhan will hold talks with the UAE leadership, while his high-level ministerial delegation is scheduled to discuss with a team from the U.S. government already in the UAE over removing Sudan from the U.S. list of states sponsors of terrorism, supporting Sudan's transitional period and relieving Sudan of its debts owed to Washington, the Council said in a statement.
Since the ouster of former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, rapprochement between Khartoum and Washington has gathered speed despite the outstanding issues.
The United States started imposing economic sanctions on Sudan in 1997 and has been listing it as one of the countries sponsoring terrorism since 1993.
In 2017, Washington decided to lift its economic sanctions on Sudan, but kept it on its terror sponsors list. Enditem
