SAO PAULO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people were killed and another was seriously injured on Sunday when a truck collided with a passenger van along a highway in Patos de Minas, a town in Brazil's southeast state of Minas Gerais.

According to the Federal Highway Police in Minas Gerais, the van carrying farm workers drove into the opposite lane as it tried to clear a tree that had fallen on the road from grassland fires in the area, causing the crash.

Authorities said 11 of the 12 people traveling in the van were killed, as was the truck driver.

The van shuttled farm workers to different plantations in the region, according to the regional daily Estado de Minas. Enditem
