BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's COVID-19 death toll surpassed 137,000 on Monday after 377 more patients died from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the previous 24 hours, raising the total number of fatalities to 137,272.

According to the Ministry of Health, tests detected 13,439 new cases of infection in the same period, bringing the total caseload since the start of the outbreak to 4,558,068.

QUITO -- Ecuador's southwest port city of Guayaquil, the country's main economic and industrial center, on Monday relaxed lockdown restrictions on mobility despite having one of the country's largest outbreaks of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Mayor Cynthia Viteri, who chairs Guayaquil's Emergency Operations Committee (COE), which manages the local health crisis, announced at a press conference there would be no more restrictions on vehicles in the city, one of the country's most populated.

RAMALLAH -- A senior Palestinian official announced on Monday that the Palestinian Health Ministry recorded 611 new COVID-19 cases and nine deaths in the Palestinian territories.

Mai al-Kaila, Palestinian health minister, said in an emailed press statement that the health ministry also recorded 968 more recovered cases in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.

SANTIAGO -- Chile's Ministry of Health on Monday reported 1,194 new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in the past 24 hours, bringing the total caseload since the onset of the outbreak in the country to 447,468.

It was the lowest daily number of new cases since early May.

However, health authorities are concerned about a potential increase in cases due to the national holiday celebrations this past weekend.

JERUSALEM -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Israel has reached 190,929, with 3,027 new cases, Israel's Ministry of Health said on Monday.

The death toll reached 1,273 after 17 new fatalities were added, while the number of patients in serious condition increased from 643 to 653, out of 1,359 patients currently hospitalized.

ALGIERS -- The total COVID-19 cases in Algeria exceeded 50,000 on Monday after 197 new cases were added in the past 24 hours.

The tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 50,023, while seven new fatalities were reported, bringing the death toll to 1,679 in Algeria.

LONDON -- Britain's chief medical officers (CMOs) have recommended moving the country's COVID-19 alert level from level 3 to level 4, according to a joint statement released on Monday from the CMOs.

"The CMOs for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have reviewed the evidence and recommend all 4 nations of the UK should move to level 4," said the statement. Enditem
