MADRID, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) on Tuesday predicted that this autumn in the country will be warmer and drier than average, following a summer that was also hotter than normal.
In its quarterly forecast, the AEMET said that the average temperatures in the autumn months will be 0.6 degrees Celsius above average, adding temperatures could be as much as one degree Celsius higher in the mountainous areas in the north and center of Spain.
Precipitation is also expected to be less intense than the average for the period between 1981 and 2010.
The agency also said that the summer of 2020 was the ninth warmest on record in Spain and also the ninth hottest in this century.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, AEMET spokesperson Ruben del Campo explained that the past six summers have been now classified as "warm," and that this showed a "warming trend" due to climate change.
He said that the increasing temperatures have also affected the Mediterranean Sea, the surface temperature of which was the fourth warmest since 1981. The Mediterranean was "clearly heating up," he commented. Enditem
