BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil on Wednesday reported 869 more deaths from the novel coronavirus, raising its national total to 138,977 since the start of the pandemic.

Tests also detected 33,281 infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 4,624,885, according to the health ministry.

BUENOS AIRES -- The Argentine government warned on Wednesday that the novel coronavirus pandemic is spreading throughout the country, with a higher incidence of cases and deaths in provinces outside of Buenos Aires.

"The provinces of La Rioja (northwest) and Jujuy (northwest) have surpassed the city of Buenos Aires in incidence in the last 14 days, and other provinces that have a significant number of cases in relation to the population are the provinces of Santa Cruz (south), Mendoza (west), Tierra del Fuego (south), Rio Negro (south), Santa Fe (east), and Salta (north), which are above the country's average," said Health Ministry's Secretary of Access to Health Carla Vizzotti.

CHICAGO -- U.S. state of Missouri Governor Mike Parson has tested positive for COVID-19, the governor's office announced on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old governor of the U.S. Midwest state is the second U.S. governor known to have tested positive for COVID-19, after Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, who contracted the virus in July.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 11,316 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, bringing the total confirmed cases to 204,690.

The number of total death cases reached 1,325, with 40 new fatalities, while the number of patients in serious condition decreased from 668 to 657, out of 1,370 patients currently hospitalized.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's coronavirus cabinet decided on Wednesday to impose a full nationwide closure as the country's soaring daily new cases showed no signs of decelerating.

The new restrictions are scheduled to begin on Friday and will last at least until the evening of Simhat Torah, a major Jewish holiday, on Oct. 10.

QUITO -- Ecuador on Wednesday reported a record number of new daily cases of novel coronavirus infection, after tests detected 2,249 cases in the previous 24 hours.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, the new cases pushed the total number of people who have tested positive since the start of the outbreak to 129,892.

ALGIERS -- Algeria on Wednesday reported 186 new COVID-19 cases and nine new fatalities, bringing the total infections to 50,400 and the death toll to 1,698, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

It is the lowest daily infection increase since June 29, according to the ministry statement. Enditem
