Tokyo stocks open sharply lower after Wall Street's tumble

TOKYO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Thursday following Wall Street's tumble overnight amid mounting concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

As markets opened here, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 237.33 points, or 1.02 percent, from Wednesday to 23,109.16.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 12.34 points, or 0.75 percent, at 1,631.91.

Iron and steel, nonferrous metal and real estate issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell. Enditem
