BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAIRO -- Egypt reported late on Wednesday 121 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number registered in the country since the outbreak to 102,375, said the Health Ministry.

In addition, 16 patients died from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 5,822, while 700 were cured and discharged from hospitals, increasing the total recoveries to 91,843, the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

SYDNEY -- Australia's largest city Sydney will undergo a hospitality facelift to aid with its recovery from COVID-19, with officials slashing restrictions on outdoor dining and 24-hour entertainment.

City officials revealed Thursday they would partner with the state government to "cut red tape" and make it easier for businesses to utilize unclaimed spaces such as laneways and footpaths to create outdoor dining precincts.

OTTAWA -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday evening that the second wave of COVID-19 epidemic has already begun in the country amid concerns over a possible national lockdown.

"In our four biggest provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec), the second wave isn't just starting, it's already underway. We're on the brink of a fall that could be much worse than the spring," said Trudeau in his evening address to the nation.

ULAN BATOR -- A total of 209 Mongolian nationals returned home from Europe on a chartered flight on Thursday, according to the Mongolian State Emergency Commission (SEC).

The chartered flight from Frankfurt to Ulan Bator landed at the Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport early Thursday, the SEC said in a statement.

BEIJING -- No new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported Wednesday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said Thursday.

Meanwhile, seven confirmed COVID-19 cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported, the commission said in its daily report.

No new suspected COVID-19 cases or new deaths related to the disease were reported, the commission said.

NEW DELHI -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India Thursday morning rose to 5,732,518, India's federal health ministry said.

During the past 24 hours, 86,508 new cases were reported from across the country. Besides this 1,129 deaths were also recorded. Enditem
