NUR-SULTAN, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan has assumed the chairmanship of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) for 2020-2022, the press service of the Kazakh foreign ministry said.
Chairing a virtual meeting of the foreign ministers of the CICA member states on Thursday, Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi said his country will continue promoting cooperation between CICA members and enhancing the CICA's status in the international arena during the chairmanship.
The ministers attending the meeting discussed the most pressing international and regional issues, especially the consolidation of efforts to fight COVID-19 between the CICA member states, the ministry added.
Kazakhstan took over the chairmanship of the CICA from Tajikistan. Kazakh diplomat Kairat Sarybai was unanimously approved as the executive director of the CICA Secretariat during the meeting.
The CICA is a multilateral cooperation mechanism that seeks to promote peace, security and interaction in Asia. It now has 27 member states and 13 observers. Enditem
