WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate passed a resolution on Thursday reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful transition of power.

The resolution, introduced by Senator from West Virginia and Democrat Joe Manchin, was passed unanimously, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump refused to commit to such a transition should he lose the election in November. (US-Senate-Trump)

PARIS -- France's health authorities on Thursday reported 16,096 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour span, a new daily record of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.

The country's previous highest daily of new cases was at 13,498 reported on Sept. 19. Thursday's figure brought the cumulative total of confirmed coronavirus cases in France to 497,237. The total deaths reached 31,511, up by 52 in the past 24 hours, according to official data. (France-Coronavirus)

OSTEND -- Ostend-Bruges International Airport in Belgium held a ceremony on Thursday to officially mark the opening of new "Air Silk Road" cargo routes between China and Belgium.

The airport has worked closely with the Beijing Hongyuan Group to open direct cargo flights to major Chinese cities such as Shanghai in East China, Shijiazhuang in North China and Nanchang in South China. The group had been conducting test flights at Ostend-Bruges airport since early August. (Belgium-Air Silk Road-china)

LAGOS -- At least 16 people were injured after a gas tanker exploded in the Ifako-Ijaiye area of Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, a rescue official said Thursday.

Olatunde Akinsanya, the director of operations of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, told reporters that the impact of the explosion led to a fire on adjoining buildings and several vehicles burnt. (Nigeria-Accident-Explosion) Enditem
