NEW YORK, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened mostly lower on Friday as Wall Street is on track for its fourth straight weekly loss amid market turbulence.
Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 115.00 points, or 0.43 percent, to 26,700. The S&P 500 dipped 8.14 points, or 0.25 percent, to 3,238.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 13.47 points, or 0.13 percent, to 10,685.74.
Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors traded lower, with materials down 0.7 in morning trading, leading the laggards. Real estate climbed 0.3, the best-performing group.
Investors continued to worry about the prospect of U.S. economic recovery.
Data released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor showed that the nation's jobless claims remained elevated as 870,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week. Continuing claims, or the number of people already receiving benefits, stood at 12.6 million for the week ending Sept. 12.
As of Thursday's close, the Dow was down 3 percent week to date, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq lost 2.2 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. The moves came after the major indexes posted their third straight weekly loss as investors continued to dump shares of high-flying tech firms. Enditem
