LOS ANGELES, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The 2020 California International Marathon has been canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers announced on Friday.

"We are devastated to announce that we are cancelling the 2020 California International Marathon (CIM). We appreciate everyone's patience and support as we worked through all possible options and considerations for all of our event stakeholders: registrants, sponsors, charities, vendors, partners, staff, volunteers, and the entire greater-Sacramento community," said the Sacramento Running Association in a statement.

The annual event was originally planned to be held on Dec. 6, in Sacramento, capital of the state of California.

The association noted it is important that the event "continues to be a positive health and wellness force for our community, rather than one that poses a potential risk of any kind."

The 2021 California International Marathon is scheduled for Dec. 5, 2021. The organizers said that they expect to be able to fully operate the event, but added, "Obviously, in the ever-changing public health landscape with changing guidelines, it is impossible at this point to say exactly what the event will look like."

The California International Marathon is a Boston Marathon and U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier, according to the organizers. Enditem
