Live COVID-19 updates: Egypt reports 111 new cases, 102,736 in total

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAIRO -- Egypt recorded late on Saturday 111 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total infections in the country to 102,736, said the Health Ministry.

In a statement, the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said 16 patients died from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 5,869.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 95 more cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 23,611.

The daily caseload stayed below 100 for two straight days, but the double-digit increase continued owing to cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported two new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

According to the ministry, both the new cases were imported cases detected in managed isolation facilities, with no new case in the community.

HONG KONG -- With the central government's support, Hong Kong is building a makeshift hospital and adding new treatment facilities in AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) in case a new wave of the COVID-19 epidemic breaks out in winter.

Michael Wong, secretary for development of the government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said on Sunday that the construction starting Sept. 19 has progressed smoothly and predicted the treatment facilities expansion project in AWE will be completed in four weeks.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally is inching towards the 6-million mark, reaching 5,992,532 on Sunday, as the death toll reached 94,503, according to the latest data released by the federal health ministry.

As many as 88,600 new COVID-19 cases and 1,124 deaths were reported across the country in the past 24 hours.

BEIJING -- No new locally transmitted confirmed, asymptomatic, or suspected cases of COVID-19 were reported in Beijing on Saturday, the municipal health commission said Sunday.

The capital also reported no new imported confirmed, asymptomatic, or suspected cases on Saturday, according to the commission. Enditem
