Live COVID-19 updates: Iran reports over 3,000 more cases, close to 200 deaths

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 3,874 within one day to 275,213, with the death toll adding by 78 to 10,386, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

According to the ministry, 3,611 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 203,014.

TEHRAN -- Iran reported 3,362 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, raising the total confirmed number in the country to 446,448.

The pandemic has so far claimed 25,589 lives in Iran, up by 195 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

SUVA -- Fiji's Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama on Sunday called for global solidarity, commitment and urgency in rebuilding the global economy suffering from the devastations caused by climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his address to the general debate of the 75th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations on Sunday, Bainimarama said that climate change and the coronavirus may be very different beasts but the inequities they have exposed are all-too-familiar for Small Island Developing States including Fiji.

BEIRUT -- The first batch of 20 Chinese peacekeepers to Lebanon arrived in Beirut on Sunday for the UN mission to clean up and reconstruct the Lebanese capital after huge explosions swept through its port in early August.

The second batch of 21 peacekeepers from China's 19th batch of peacekeeping multi-functional engineer detachment will arrive in Beirut on Tuesday.

Before arrival, the Chinese peacekeeping forces had been to Beirut three times for mission surveys, while preparing measures for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
