TIRANA, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- European Union (EU) Delegation to Albania and the Albanian government launched in the port city of Durres on Tuesday a 40-million-euro (around 46.8 million U.S. dollars) program to help rehabilitate the country's cultural heritage sites damaged by the earthquake on Nov. 26 last year.

According to the EU delegation, the EU4Culture program "seeks to remediate the effect of the earthquake through the reconstruction, rehabilitation and valorization of the Albanian cultural heritage damaged by the earthquake."

The program aims to revitalize cultural sites -- such as the Archaeological Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Tirana, the Durres Amphitheatre, as well as castles and religious monuments -- by improving Albania's potential for tourism.

At the launching ceremony, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama praised the financial contribution the EU has given to Albania for overcoming the consequences left by the earthquake, adding that the program will bring development and employment for Albanian society.

The program will be implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services in close coordination and collaboration with the Ministry of Culture over the next four years. Enditem
