Roundup: Iran's tally of COVID-19 cases surpasses 450,000 as Israel mulls further extension of nationwide lockdown

CAIRO, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Iran crossed 450,000 on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Israel is poised to extend the current nationwide lockdown for two weeks to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

Iran, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East, reported 3,677 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, raising the total confirmed coronavirus infections in the country to 453,637.

The pandemic has so far claimed 25,986 lives in Iran, up by 207 in the past 24 hours, while a total of 378,727 people have recovered from the disease, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

Israel on Tuesday recorded 2,200 new COVID-19 cases and 16 more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 235,465 and the death toll to 1,523. The total count of recoveries rose by 2,377 to 167,568.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a live broadcast on his Facebook page that the current nationwide lockdown, imposed on Sept. 18 for 23 days, will last "at least a month."

Israeli Minister of Health Yuli Edelstein also said in radio interviews that the ongoing lockdown will be extended for at least another two weeks starting Oct. 11.

In Iraq, now the hardest-hit Arab country, the total COVID-19 cases increased by 4,724 to 358,290, while the death toll from the virus rose to 9,122 after 70 more deaths were added overnight.

The Iraqi Health Ministry also said 4,028 more patients recovered in the day, bringing the total number of recoveries in Iraq to 288,812.

The ministry predicted an increase in COVID-19 infections due to the expected lower temperature in the coming winter and the refusal by many citizens to abide by the anti-coronavirus measures.

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday reported 539 new COVID-19 cases, raising the tally of infections in the kingdom to 334,187, including 10,906 active cases.

The Saudi Ministry of Health also reported 27 new death from the disease, taking the death toll to 4,739, while the total count of recoveries increased by 696 to 318,542.

In Turkey, 1,427 new COVID-19 infections were detected on Tuesday, raising the tally of confirmed cases in the country to 317,272.

The Turkish health ministry also reported 68 more deaths from the virus, taking the death toll to 8,130, while the total recoveries rose to 278,504.

Morocco registered 2,076 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the tally in the North African country to 121,183.

The death toll in Morocco soared by 39 to 2,152, while the tally of recoveries increased by 2,785 to 100,253 in the last 24 hours.

Lebanon's number of COVID-19 infections increased on Tuesday by 1,105 to 38,377, while the death toll went up by 10 to 361, the Health Ministry reported.

Firas Abiad, director of Rafic Hariri University Hospital, warned of a further increase in COVID-19 infections which poses a great challenge to Lebanese hospitals.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday announced 995 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 93,090.

The tally of recoveries increased by 1,076 to 82,538, while the death toll rose by three to 416, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention said.

Libya on Tuesday reported 801 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 34,014.

The National Center for Disease Control of Libya also announced 384 new recoveries and 13 more deaths, raising the total recoveries in Libya to 18,902 and the death toll to 540.

In Jordan, the tally of COVID-19 cases crossed the 10,000 mark on Tuesday to hit 10,049 after 823 new infections were recorded.

The death toll climbed by six to 57, while the total number of recoveries rose by 137 to 4,496, the Jordanian Health Ministry said.

Kuwait reported 587 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 104,568 and the death toll to 607.

The Kuwaiti Health Ministry said 7,912 patients are receiving treatment, including 127 in the intensive care units, as the total number of recoveries climbed to 96,049 with the addition of 538 more recoveries.

Oman's Health Ministry announced 528 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 98,585, including 935 deaths and 88,528 recoveries.

In Qatar, the health ministry confirmed 222 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 125,533, including 214 deaths and 122,448 recoveries.

Palestine reported 420 new coronavirus cases in the Palestinian territories, raising the total number to 50,115., while the death toll climbed to 360 after seven new deaths were added.

Egypt on late Monday reported 115 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total infections in the country to 102,955, while the death toll rose by 18 to 5,901 and the total recoveries increased by 506 to 95,586. Enditem
