RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Tuesday that his government was open to proposals and suggestions to stave off potential social unrest next year from the economic blow of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"My government seeks to anticipate the serious social problems that may arise in 2021, if nothing is done to attend to this mass (of people) who lost everything or almost everything," the president said via Twitter.

"We are open to suggestions," he said, adding that "fiscal responsibility and respect for the spending cap are the guiding principles of the economy."

The government's emergency financial aid program for those who lost their income due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown -- some 67 million people -- expires Dec. 31.

"Everyone is aware that millions of jobs and incomes were destroyed due to the policy of 'stay at home, we'll see to the economy later.' The bill has arrived," Bolsonaro said in a statement to the press on Tuesday.

If a solution is not found for the millions of beneficiaries of the current emergency aid, Brazil may face "very serious social unrest" next year, and the government may become the target of "monstrous criticism," said Bolsonaro.

"Now we have to look for alternatives. We know that there are no resources, so we have to look for alternatives," he said. Enditem
