Roundup: India reports 81,484 new COVID-19 cases, Indonesia confirms 4,317 new cases

HONG KONG, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as India reported 81,484 new cases on Friday while Indonesia confirmed 4,317 new cases.

With 81,484 new cases registered, the COVID-19 tally reached 6,394,068 in India, according to the latest data released by the health ministry.

The death toll in the country reached 99,773 as 1,095 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, added the ministry's data.

There are still 942,217 active cases in India, while 5,352,078 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals across the country.

Malaysia reported 287 new infections in the highest daily spike since the outbreak, the Health Ministry said, bringing the national total to 11,771.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press briefing that none of the new cases were imported, all being local transmissions. Some 128 cases were reported from a cluster related to a prison in the northern Kelantan State.

Of the remaining 1,540 active cases, 22 are being held in intensive care and four of those are in need of assisted breathing.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 4,317 within one day to 295,499, with the death toll adding by 116 to 10,972, the Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, 2,853 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 221,340.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 316,678 after the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,611 new daily cases.

Friday's new daily cases recorded means that the Philippines' daily increase in virus infections has been below 3,000 for the fourth consecutive day.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries also rose to 254,617 after 416 more patients recovered. Meanwhile, 56 more patients died from the viral disease, bringing the death toll to 5,616.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Maldives has risen to 10,354, local media reported.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), 63 new cases, including 31 locals and 32 foreigners, were detected in the Maldives on Thursday.

The Maldives currently has 1,126 active cases spread across 24 inhabited islands and 21 resorts. Of these, 79 patients have been hospitalized for treatment.

A total of 9,187 patients have fully recovered from the virus so far, while 34 have died.

Afghanistan reported five new COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 39,290, the country's Ministry of Public Health confirmed.

The number of people who lost their lives to the disease remained at 1,458 since the outbreak of the pandemic in Afghanistan in February.

The number of people recovered stands at 32,842 after no new recovery was registered since early Thursday. Enditem
