Roundup: Iran's COVID-19 infections rise to 468,119; WHO expresses concern over increasing high infections in Iraq

CAIRO, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Iran reported 3,523 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, raising the total confirmed number in the country to 468,119. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Iraq expressed concerns over the increasing high infections in the country.

The pandemic has so far taken 26,746 lives in Iran, up by 179 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

A total of 387,675 people have recovered from the disease and been discharged from hospitals, while 4,127 remain in intensive care units.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani announced the resolve of country's authorities for implementation of strict measures to deal with the resurgence and spread of COVID-19.

Rouhani said that all the servants in the state institutions and private businesses have to observe health protocols strictly.

The Iraqi Health Ministry reported 3,672 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total nationwide infections to 375,931.

The ministry also reported 49 more deaths, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 9,347 in the country. It also said that 3,861 more patients recovered in the day, bringing the total number of recoveries to 303,665.

WHO representative in Iraq Adham Ismail said that the continuous increase in number of COVID-19 infections in Iraq is raising concerns due to the social gatherings and the approaching of winter.

"The spread of the virus in the country at present is still under control and the government is making efforts to contain and control the pandemic," Ismail was quoted as saying by official al-Sabah newspaper on Saturday.

Saudi Arabia registered 419 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total cases to 335,997. The death toll reached 4,850 with the reporting of 27 new fatalities.

Turkey's number of COVID-19 patients increased by 1,502, raising the tally to 323,014, the Turkish Health Ministry announced.

Meanwhile, 59 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 8,384, according to the data shared by the ministry.

Morocco registered 2,663 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally in the North African country since March 2 to 131,228, the health ministry said in a statement.

In addition, 30 new deaths were reported, pushing the death toll to 2,293. The total recoveries increased by 2,643 to 108,687 in the last 24 hours, while 440 patients are in intensive care units.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced 1,231 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 97,760.

At the same time, 1,051 more patients have recovered from the virus, taking the tally of recoveries in the UAE to 87,122, UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said. It also confirmed two more deaths, pushing the country's death toll to 426.

The Qatari health ministry announced 175 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 126,339, the official Qatar News Agency reported.

The ministry said that 194 more recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 123,302, while one reportedly died, raising the fatalities to 216.

Kuwait reported 371 new COVID-19 cases and five more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 106,458 and the death toll to 620, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 537 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 98,435.

Egypt registered late on Friday 149 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number in the country to 103,466, said the Health Ministry.

In a statement, the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said 10 patients died from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 5,956. He said 288 others were completely cured and dispatched from hospitals, brining the total recoveries to 97,143.

Lebanon registered the highest daily increase in COVID-19 infections by 1,321 to 43,494 while death toll went up by 12 to 398, the Health Ministry reported.

Algeria reported 148 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the tally of the infections to 51,995, the Ministry of Health said. The ministry also announced seven new fatalities from coronavirus, raising the death toll to 1,756.

Palestine reported 406 new coronavirus cases, taking the tally of infections in the Palestinian territories to 52,013, including 43,107 recoveries and 390 deaths. Enditem
