BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ANKARA -- Turkey reported 1,581 new COVID-19 patients on Wednesday, raising the total tally in the country to 329,138.

In addition, 56 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 8,609, while 1,355 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 288,954, according to the Health Ministry.

ALGIERS -- Algeria on Wednesday reported 121 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest daily increase since June 20, bringing the total tally of infections to 52,520, the Ministry of Health said.

The ministry also announced six new fatalities from the novel coronavirus, raising the country's death toll to 1,779.

JERUSALEM -- The number of coronavirus cases in Israel has reached 281,481, with 4,455 new cases, the state's Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

The number of death cases reached 1,824, with 27 new fatalities, while the number of patients in serious condition dropped from 880 to 866, out of 1,582 patients currently hospitalized.

SANTIAGO -- The Chilean government announced on Wednesday that the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) rose to 474,440, with 1,131 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, while the death toll rose to 13,090 after 20 more deaths were registered in the same period.

The Ministry of Health stated that in the last 24 hours, 19,706 COVID-19 tests were carried out, bringing the total number of tests administered to 3,548,773.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office at the White House on Wednesday while still recuperating from COVID-19.

Trump was briefed on economic stimulus talks and Hurricane Delta, a potentially devastating storm heading toward the Gulf Coast, according to White House spokesman Brian Morgenstern.

RABAT -- Morocco on Wednesday reported 2,776 new COVID-19 cases, the biggest single-day increase so far, taking the number of infections in the country since March 2 to 140,024.

The total number of recoveries from COVID-19 in Morocco increased to 118,142 after 2,788 new ones were added, the ministry of health said in a statement.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon registered on Wednesday the highest daily increase in the number of COVID-19 infections since the outbreak of the virus by 1,459 to 48,377 while death toll went up by nine to 433, the Health Ministry reported.

The ministry has been active in the fight against the virus during the past days by imposing new lockdown measures in 111 villages while working excessively to expand departments capable of receiving COVID-19 patients in public hospitals all over the country. Enditem
