NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The latest coronavirus positivity rate in the the 20 hotspot Zip Codes in Queens, Brooklyn, Orange and Rockland counties in New York State was 5.8 percent, more than five times the statewide positivity rate excluding these Zip Codes which stood at 1.01 percent, tweeted Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday.

"We are taking quick action to respond to the clusters & stop the spread," said the governor, who has announced earlier on Wednesday that the COVID-19 infection rate in the state's hotspots was five times what the rate was statewide.

Shutdowns of non-essential businesses, schools and social gatherings in those hotspot areas have gradually taken effect this week under the instructions of the governor and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, though it has triggered criticism and protests from certain groups and some parents.

"We are all going to have to work to get through this challenge to make sure that New York City does not experience what so many other parts of this country have experienced when they had a full-blown second wave of the coronavirus," the mayor said on Thursday in a press release.

On his Twitter account, de Blasio said that "we're are fighting back new #COVID-19 outbreaks in our city," adding that 1,200 city personnel were "on the ground TODAY" with "outreach to restaurants" and "robocalls to all households in Red & Orange Zones (where the pandemic is severe)."

According to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. coronavirus death toll reached 212,420 as of Thursday afternoon, and the number of confirmed cases was 7,586,904. New York remains one of the worst-hit states in the country. Enditem
