Live COVID-19 updates: Libya's total COVID-19 cases surpass 40,000

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TRIPOLI -- Libya on Thursday reported 779 new COVID-19 cases, as the total confirmed cases in the country crossed the 40,000 mark.

The National Center for Disease Control of Libya said that the tally of COVID-19 cases in Libya climbed to 40,292.

Libya's death toll from the virus rose by eight to 616, while the tally of recoveries increased by 299 to 23,130, the center said in a statement.

RABAT -- Morocco's tally of the COVID-19 pandemic reached Thursday 142,953 after 2,929 new cases were recorded across the country in the highest single-day spike since March 2.

The death toll in the country reached 2,486 after 47 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, the highest daily death toll in the North African country, the ministry of health said in a statement.

RAMALLAH -- Palestine on Thursday reported 416 new cases infected with the novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the Palestinian territories to 54,355.

In a press statement, Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila said that out of the 54,355 cases, 39,505 were recorded in the West Bank, 11,099 in East Jerusalem and 3,751 in the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian health ministry recorded four fatalities from the COVID-19, raising the total number of deaths to 422, the minister noted.

LUANDA -- A group of Chinese medical experts, who worked in the front line of the fight against the COVID-19 in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak in China, arrived in Angola on Wednesday night to exchange experience with local professionals and aid the country's fight against the pandemic.

The Chinese professionals are in Angola for a 15-day intensive work in the framework of the solidarity and cooperation between the two governments to help the Southern African country fight the pandemic.

BEIJING -- No new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported Thursday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said Friday.

A total of 21 confirmed cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported, the commission said in its daily report.

No new suspected cases or deaths related to the disease were reported, the commission added.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 3,855 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the tally of infections to 285,336.

The death count rose by 40 to 1,864, while the number of patients in serious condition decreased from 866 to 865, out of 1,592 patients currently hospitalized, it said. Enditem
