BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SOFIA -- The Bulgarian Health Ministry on Friday morning reported a record high of 516 new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours in the country, taking the national tally to 23,259.

The previous daily records of 437 and 436 new cases were reported on Thursday and Wednesday, respectively.

CAIRO -- Egypt reported late on Thursday 121 new infections and seven deaths of COVID-19, bringing the total cases registered in the country to 104,156, including 6,017 deaths, said the Egyptian Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, 32 patients completely recovered from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, increasing the total recoveries to 97,524, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 54 more cases of the COVID-19 as of midnight Thursday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 24,476.

The daily caseload stayed below 100 for two straight days, but the double-digit growth continued due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province.

SHANGHAI -- Shanghai reported six imported COVID-19 cases and no domestically transmitted cases Thursday, the municipal health commission said Friday.

The six cases were four Chinese nationals, one Moroccan, and one American. All the cases have been sent to designated medical institutions for treatment, and a total of 141 people in close contact with the patients on flights have been put under quarantine.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil reported 729 deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's death toll to 148,957, the health ministry said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, about 27,750 new infections were reported, taking the national count to 5,028,444, said the ministry.

Brazil's COVID-19 cases surpassed 5 million on Wednesday and is the third worst hit by the pandemic after the United States and India. The country also has the world's second-highest death toll, after the United States. Enditem
