MAPUTO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Mozambique invited Friday the leader of the proclaimed Military Junta, a dissident faction from the country's main opposition Renamo, to dialogue in order to secure indefinite peace to all Mozambicans.

Mirko Manzoni, also the chairperson of the international contact group supporting the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) process in Mozambique, expressed the request in a statement, saying that through dialogue any grievance can be resolved.

"All Mozambicans deserve to live without fear and I firmly believe that the peaceful resolution of conflict through communication and dialogue is the only credible way forward", said Manzoni in the statement.

The UN envoy said he echoes President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade's belief that the opportunity to lay down arms and reintegrate into society in a meaningful way should be extended to all, and is committed to supporting efforts to put an end to attacks in central Mozambique.

The progress in DDR process in the past months is the evidence of the will of the people to secure a peaceful future for themselves and their families, he said.

"I have witnessed first-hand the hope and relief felt by ex-combatants now that they finally have the opportunity to return home. It is clear to me that there is no desire to return to the days of conflict," said Manzoni. Enditem
