RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Inflation in Brazil reached 0.64 percent in September, 0.40 percent higher than August, and the highest percentage for the month since 2003, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported on Friday.
According to the report, during the same month last year, a deflation of 0.04 percent was observed.
Seven of the nine areas analyzed showed an increase in prices in September, led by food and beverages (2.28 percent), household items (1 percent), and transportation (0.7 percent), the IBGE report said.
A decrease in prices, however, was registered in such areas as health and personal care, which saw a decrease of 0.64 percent, as well as education, which saw a decrease of 0.09 percent.
The Brazilian government has set an inflation target of 4 percent for this year, with a tolerance margin of 1.5 points.
Financial analysts predict that this year inflation will reach 2.12 percent in Brazil, lower than the government's target. Enditem
