Roundup: Iran's COVID-19 cases increase to 496,253; Iraq's confirmed infections exceed 400,000

CAIRO, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Iran rose to 496,253 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Iraq's tally of coronavirus infections surpassed 400,000.

Iran, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East region, reported 3,875 new cases, bringing the total number of infections to 496,253.

The pandemic has so far claimed 28,293 lives in Iran, up by 195 in the past 24 hours. A total of 403,950 coronavirus patients have recovered, with 4,439 still in critical condition.

In the meantime, 2,344 new COVID-19 cases were detected in Iraq during the past 24 hours, bringing the total nationwide infections to 400,124.

The death toll from the coronavirus in Iraq rose to 9,790 after 55 fatalities were added, while the total recoveries increased to 332,330 as 4,233 more patients recovered.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Health Ministry's Spokesman Sayf al-Badr said in a press release that the possibility of increasing COVID-19 infections in the coming days is high due to the increase in the number of seasonal influenza infections during the winter.

The recent increase of coronavirus infections in the country also prompted Iraqi Deputy Health Minister Hazim al-Jumaili to announce late on Friday that the Ministry of Health will discuss a return to the curfew measure in the Higher Committee for Health of National Safety, which is headed by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

Saudi Arabia announced 405 new cases and 22 more deaths, raising the tally of confirmed cases to 338,944 and the death toll to 5,018.

The kingdom also reported 455 more recovered patients, taking the total recoveries to 324,737.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Turkey climbed by 1,649 to 334,031, Turkish Health Ministry said.

The death toll from the coronavirus in the country rose to 8,778 after 56 new fatalities were added in the past 24 hours, the ministry said, adding that the total recoveries increased to 293,145.

The rate of pneumonia in COVID-19 patients is 6.2 percent and the number of seriously ill patients is 1,414, the Turkish health ministry noted.

In Morocco, the tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 149,841 after 3,443 new cases were added, which included 2,572 fatalities and 124,854 recoveries.

In Qatar, 178 new cases of coronavirus infections were detected, increasing the total number to 127,778, including 124,767 recoveries and 219 deaths.

Kuwait reported 492 new cases, bringing the country's total number of infections to 110,568, of whom 655 have died and 102,722 recovered.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced 1,129 new cases, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 105,133.

The tally of recoveries in the UAE rose to 95,973 after 1,070 more patients have recovered from the virus and the death toll reached 443 with one more death.

Egypt reported late on Friday 106 new infections and 12 deaths of COVID-19, bringing the total cases registered in the country to 104,262, including 6,029 deaths, said the Egyptian Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, 68 patients completely recovered from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, increasing the total recoveries to 97,592, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

Palestine reported 281 new coronavirus cases, taking the tally of infections in the Palestinian territories to 55,134, including 442 deaths.

In Lebanon, the number of COVID-19 infections increased by 1,388 to 52,558, while the death toll went up by five to 455.

Libya said on Saturday that the country registered 318 new cases of the virus on the previous day, raising the tally of infections to 41,686, with 23,791 recoveries and 623 fatalities.

In Jordan, 1,235 new COVID-19 cases and 15 more deaths were recorded, increasing the tally of cases to 23,998 and the death toll to 181. Enditem
