Roundup: Iran sees highest daily death toll from COVID-19; Morocco's tally exceeds 150,000

CAIRO, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Sunday reported 251 death cases over the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, making the highest single-day death toll since the virus outbreak in the country. Meanwhile, Morocco's tally surpassed 150,000.

Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said during her daily briefing that the total deaths rose to 28,544 in the country.

Lari noted that the authorities recorded 3,822 new overnight infections, raising the total confirmed cases in the country to 500,075.

She said that a total of 406,389 people have recovered from the disease and been discharged from hospitals so far, while 4,482 remain in intensive care units.

The head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi has contracted novel coronavirus, the public relations department of the AEOI confirmed on Sunday.

Salehi was tested positive for the virus last week and since then he is under homecare, said the report.

Morocco registered 2,563 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally in the North African country to 152,404, the health ministry said in a statement. It also reported 33 new deaths from the coronavirus, raising the death toll in Morocco to 2,605.

The tally of recoveries in Morocco increased by 2,553 to 127,407 in the last 24 hours, while 461 patients remained in the intensive care units.

The Iraqi Health Ministry reported 2,206 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the nationwide infections to 402,330.

The ministry also reported 62 more deaths and 3,827 new recovered cases, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 9,852 and the total recoveries to 336,157 in the country.

Sayf al-Badr, the ministry's spokesman, told the official Iraqi News Agency that the hospitals are still using the blood plasma of recovered people to help cure the infected, asserting that such treatment is not part of the official treatment protocol, but it proved successful.

Saudi Arabia announced 323 new cases and 25 more deaths, raising the tally of confirmed cases to 339,267 and the death toll to 5,043.

The kingdom also reported 593 more recovered patients, taking the total recoveries to 325,330.

Turkey reported 1,502 new COVID-19 patients, raising the total tally in the country to 335,533.

In addition, 59 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 8,837, while 1,212 more patients recovered, raising the total number of recoveries to 294,357, according to the Health Ministry.

The rate of pneumonia in COVID-19 patients is 6.2 percent and the number of seriously ill patients is 1,411, the ministry said.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced 1,096 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 106,229.

At the same time, 1,311 more patients have recovered from the virus, taking the tally of recoveries in the UAE to 97,284, UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said. It also confirmed two more deaths, pushing the country's death toll to 445.

The Qatari Health Ministry announced 207 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total confirmed number in the Gulf state to 127,985.

The ministry said that 211 more patients recovered from the virus, bringing the overall recoveries to 124,978, while the fatalities increased by one to 220.

Kuwait reported 548 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 111,116 and the death toll to 658, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 546 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 103,268.

Egypt registered late on Saturday 125 new COVID-19 cases, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 104,387.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement that 11 more patients passed away from the coronavirus, bringing the death toll to 6,040.

He said that 51 more patients recovered and left hospitals, raising the total recoveries to 97,643, he added.

Lebanon's number of COVID-19 cases increased by 1,010 to 53,568 while the death toll went up by four to 459, the Health Ministry reported.

Palestine recorded 422 new cases infected with the novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the Palestinian territories to 55,556.

The Palestinian health ministry recorded three fatalities from the COVID-19, raising the total number of deaths to 445. Enditem
