India's COVID-19 tally rises to 7,120,538, death toll 109,150

NEW DELHI, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- With 66,732 new cases registered in India over the past 24 hours, the country's COVID-19 tally rose to 7,120,538 on Monday, according to the latest data released by the federal health ministry.

The death toll reached 109,150 with 816 deaths since Sunday morning, showed the ministry's data.

The trend over the past few weeks showed that the rise in COVID-19 tally and deaths per day has slowed down, as the increase in the number of cases has fallen below 70,000-mark and the deaths below 900 per day.

Still there are 861,853 active COVID-19 cases across the country, while 6,149,535 people were successfully cured and discharged from hospitals.

On Sunday the country's COVID-19 tally had surpassed the 7-million mark. The last 1 million COVID-19 cases were added to the tally in 13 days (Sept. 28-Oct. 10), while the previous 1 million cases were added in 12 days (Sept. 16-Sept. 28).

For over two months India's focus has been on ramping up the COVID-19 testing facilities. According to the latest data from the Indian Council of Medical Research, as many as 87,872,093 tests were conducted till Sunday, out of which 994,851 tests were conducted on Sunday alone. Enditem
