BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MANILA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 344,713 after the country's Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,990 new cases on Tuesday, the lowest increase since Sept. 23.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries also rose to 293,383 after 327 more patients recovered. Meanwhile, 40 more patients died from the viral disease, bringing the death toll to 6,372.

SUVA -- A Fijian official warned on Tuesday that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected many Fijians' ability to access healthy food which is important for people during this difficult times.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), speaking at the launch of the Food and Health Guidelines for Fiji project, Acting Permanent Secretary for Fiji's Health Ministry James Fong said that it is important to maintain a healthy diet during these times to prevent communicable and non-communicable diseases, but the pandemic, which has resulted in job losses, has led to a reduction in Fijians' ability to afford nutritional food.

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Lakers, who won the 17th NBA title in its franchise history, on Monday decided to put off any public celebration to obey the social distancing guidelines issued by the local authority for the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We cannot wait to celebrate our NBA title with our fans," the Lakers tweeted Monday afternoon when the team returned to the city from Florida. "After consulting with the City and the County, we all agree that a joyful and inclusive public celebration will take place as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, thank you again, Lakers Nation, for your support!"

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 13,868 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, bringing its total to 1,326,178, according to a statement published by the country's COVID-19 response center Tuesday.

Moscow reported most of the new cases with 4,618 infections, reaching a cumulative case count of 339,431, the center said.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported eight additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 5,201 in Hong Kong.

Among the newly-reported cases, four had a travel history during the incubation period, two are epidemiologically linked with local cases while two are local cases with unknown sources, the CHP said. Enditem
