Live COVID-19 updates: Africa's COVID-19 cases near 1.6 mln mark as death toll hits 38,868

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ADDIS ABABA -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases across the African continent has reached 1,592,549 as of Wednesday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, a specialized healthcare agency of African Union Commission, said in a statement that the number of deaths due to illnesses related to the pandemic reached 38,868 as of Wednesday afternoon.

WARSAW -- Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki tested negative after committing to quarantine, Polish Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

The prime minister is to remain in self-isolation for as long as his physician sees fit.

BUCHAREST -- Romania reported another 4,016 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, making it the highest number of infections recorded in a 24-hour span since the outbreak, announced the authorities.

Another worrying data officially announced was that the number of critically ill patients exceeded 600 for nine consecutive days, reaching a record of 686 on Wednesday.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 14,231 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, bringing its total to 1,340,409, according to a statement published by the country's COVID-19 response center Wednesday.

Moscow reported most of the new cases with 4,573 infections, reaching a cumulative case count of 344,004, the center said.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 7,239,389 and death toll 110,586 on Wednesday, as 63,509 new cases and 730 deaths were reported over the past 24 hours across the country, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry.

Still there are 826,876 active cases in the country, while 6,301,927 people have been successfully cured and discharged.

TOKYO -- Japan on Wednesday confirmed 266 new daily infections, bringing the nation's cumulative total to 90,533, not including those related to a cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo earlier in the year.

This compares to 496 new daily infections confirmed a day earlier nationwide.

Of the 266 new cases Wednesday, the Tokyo metropolitan government said that according to its preliminary figures, 177 of the new infections were detected in the capital.

QINGDAO -- Over 7.5 million people had been sampled for nucleic acid testing by 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in east China's Qingdao City, after it began a city-wide testing campaign on Monday.

Over 4.06 million of the collected samples have been tested so far and, with the exception of the cases already reported, no new positive samples have been detected, the municipal health commission said. Enditem
