Live COVID-19 updates: U.S. budget deficit hits record high amid pandemic

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. federal budget deficit soared to a record 3.1 trillion dollars in the fiscal year 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted massive fiscal stimulus and caused tax revenue to fall, official data showed Friday.

Budget deficit for the fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, was 2.1 trillion dollars higher than that of the prior year, according to the final budget results for fiscal year 2020 jointly released by U.S. Treasury Department and White House Office of Management and Budget.

NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 7,432,680 and death toll 112,998 on Saturday, as 62,212 new cases and 837 deaths were reported over the past 24 hours across the country, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry.

There are now 795,087 active cases in the country, while 6,524,595 people have been successfully cured and discharged.

BUENOS AIRES -- A total of 16,546 COVID-19 cases were reported in Argentina in the last 24 hours, taking the national count to 965,609, the Health Ministry said Friday.

Meanwhile, 381 more deaths were registered, bringing the nationwide tally to 25,723, the ministry said.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil reported 30,914 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the national tally to 5,200,300, said the health ministry on Friday.

Another 754 people died from the disease during the same period of time, bringing the death toll to 153,214, according to the ministry.

BOGOTA -- The number of COVID-19 infections rose to 945,354 in the past 24 hours in Colombia, after tests detected 8,372 new cases, Colombian health authorities said Friday.

The country's death toll climbed to 28,616 after 159 more COVID-19 fatalities were reported in the same period of time, while 837,001 people have recovered, according to the health ministry.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

According to the ministry, all three cases were imported cases detected in managed isolation facilities. The first case arrived from Britain via Singapore on Oct. 9. The second and third imported cases arrived from the United Arab Emirates on Oct. 13. Enditem
